Members of the committee appointed to amend the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Law have met with the Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Justice, a study on Muslim marriage law was conducted to increase the legal age of marriage for a Muslim girl to 18 years and to allow women to sign marriage certificates.
In addition, it has been suggested to conduct a comparative study of polygamy and present facts before the committee.
Minister Rajapakshe issued instructions to conduct a study on Muslim laws in addition to the Marriage and Divorce Law and to table proposals on ways to amend Muslim Laws.
The Justice Minister has called on committee members to look into the protocol to be followed until the relevant amendments are passed.
