Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian Premalal Jayasekara and two others have been acquitted from the death sentence imposed by the Ratnapura High Court.
The order was issued by a Court of Appeal bench comprising Justices Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and R Gurusinghe.
The Attorney General filed indictments against Parliamentarian Premalal Jayasekara and two others over the murder of an individual and injuring two others during an attack on a political rally of then common candidate Maithripala Sirisena in Kahawatte during the 2015 Presidential Election.
Announcing the verdict in the case, the Ratnapura High Court convicted the defendants and sentenced them to death on the 31st of July 2020.
The defendants filed appeals before the Court of Appeal challenging the decision and calling for their acquittal.
Accordingly, after consideration of the petitions, the Court of Appeal ordered the three defendants to be acquitted.
