The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence says the actions of Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena do not reflect prudency.

National Coordinator Manjula Gajanayake when contacted by NewsRadio over the decision by members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to boycott Parliament sittings citing security concerns said, such actions result in a deviation from an active Parliament debate.

Gajanayake said strict attention must be paid to the course of action taken by the opposition.

He said the Speaker’s actions are a contributing factor adding the Speaker must step forward and protect the honour and traditions of Parliament.

The National Coordinator said this was not the first instance of the opposition boycotting Parliament sessions adding the present administration during its tenure in the opposition also boycotted Parliamentary sessions.

Gajanayake said even though this is a normal occurrence, the public will face the brunt of it.
