Investigations into the theft of six gold caskets and other relics from the Kotawehera Temple in Daliwela, Rambukkana have been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department.
Police said the relics’ house was vandalized and a two-and-a-half-inch high gold casket, three crystal caskets and five other gold caskets and a box of relics were stolen during early hours of Saturday.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the decision was reached by the Inspector General of Police to expedite investigations into the incident and arrest the suspects.
SSP Thalduwa said the CID Division of Kegalle is currently conducting investigations.
The Police Media Spokesperson said the IGP issued directives to the DIG in charge of the CID to assign a group of CID officers to join the investigations.
He said the investigations will now be conducted jointly with the CID and the Kegalle Police officers.
SSP Thalduwa said fingerprint analysts and Police K9 units have concluded their necessary investigations while CCTV footage is being reviewed at present.
He said intelligence officers of the division have also been deployed.
