Senior DIG-Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon has recorded a statement with the Criminal Investigation Department for nearly 10 hours over last week’s violence.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa informed NewsRadio that Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon recorded a statement until 1am.
The Attorney General on Monday instructed the Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne and the CID to record statements and arrest 22 individuals, including former Ministers, and Senior DIG-Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon in connection with the attack on protesters on the 9th of May if there is sufficient evidence of their involvement.
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarians Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake were arrested by the CID on these grounds last evening.
The CID is due to record statements today from six other SLPP MPs in relation to a group of peaceful protesters being assaulted opposite Temple Trees and at Galle Face on the 9th of May.
Accordingly, statements will be recorded from MPs Johnston Fernando, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Sanjeewa Edirimanna, Rohitha Abeygunawardana, CB Ratnayake and Indika Anuruddha.
Five teams of the CID visited Parliament yesterday to record statements; however, the process was postponed till today.
