The Marine Environment Protection Authority says a special vessel is expected to enter Sri Lankan waters later this week to remove the sunken MV X-Press Pearl cargo ship.
Speaking to NewsRadio, MEPA Chairperson Dharshani Lahandapura said a Chinese vessel will arrive on the 19th of December to remove the wreckage.
She added another vessel is currently engaged in removing the containers that are on the ocean bed. Chairperson Dharshani Lahandapura said containers of the MV X-Press Pearl cargo ship are being tracked down at present by a US firm.
She said MMV Prestige vessel will remove the containers while two MEPA officials will monitor the process. Chairperson Dharshani Lahandapura added the Chinese vessel will make arrangements to remove the MV X-Press Pearl vessel from Sri Lankan waters following an assessment.
She also noted that during the past 195 days they have been clearing debris from the MV X-Press Pearl vessel which caught fire a few nautical miles from the Port of Colombo.
