President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has called on the Chinese government to direct attention towards the possibility of delaying the repayment of loan instalments as a solution to the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The request was made when President Gotabaya Rajapaksa met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the Presidential Secretariat today.
Issuing a statement the President’s Media Division said the Head of State welcomed the Chinese Foreign Minister’s visit, and recalled the historic close ties between the two nations.
President Rajapaksa also extended the gratitude of the Sri Lankan government to the Foreign Minister for the material and financial assistance received from China, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi said he was pleased to be able to return to Sri Lanka and that China will continue to extend its support to Sri Lanka as a close ally.
The visiting Foreign Minister invited President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to visit China, and expressed hope that the visit will take place in the near future.
