China has expressed willingness to play a proactive role in encouraging the International Monetary Fund to reach a decision on Sri Lanka, after considering the prevalent situation.
Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong expressed his views during a meeting with Minister of Finance Ali Sabry.
Issuing a statement, the Finance Ministry said Minister Sabry and the Chinese Ambassador discussed the current economic situation in Sri Lanka, future measures to manage economic issues, and existing ties between the two countries.
The Chinese Ambassador stated that China extends its fullest support to Sri Lanka in addressing the economic issues Sri Lanka is currently facing.
The Ambassador added China also supports Sri Lanka’s decision to restructure debt.
During the discussion, Ambassador Zhenhong said China, as a major shareholder of the IMF, is willing to play an active role in encouraging the IMF to positively consider Sri Lanka’s position and to reach an agreement at the earliest.
Commenting on bilateral debt restructuring, the Chinese Ambassador said China will support discussions with relevant financial institutions and departments in resolving maturing debt issues.
