Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Ragama Hospital, Dr. Miyuru Chandradasa says cases of child abuse have increased exponentially during the past few weeks.
Speaking to media at the Health Promotion Bureau, Dr. Chandradasa said schools being closed due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, was one of the main reasons behind the issue.
He commented that the number of children being admitted to hospitals over issues caused by abuse increased during the lockdown.
Dr. Miyuru Chandradasa hoped for everyone’s support and assistance in minimizing such issues in future.
He pointed out that children seeking treatment for mental health issues increased by 20% in 2020 and 2021, compared to 2018 and 2019.
Dr. Chandradasa also revealed that a majority of these children claim they are suffering from depression, anxiety and being addicted to screens.
Dr. Miyuru Chandradasa recalled a World Health Organisation statement that revealed one in five adolescents were suffering from mental health issues.
He said that the number of patients increasing by 20% posed a challenge to the health sector.
