Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera says fuel line management will be impossible, until Sri Lanka has an uninterrupted supply of power and a steady fuel supply.
The Minister taking to twitter, pointed out that the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation imports fuel to manage for a week due to financial restrictions, but added that some consumers collect fuel for a month or more for their machinery and generators.
The Minister explained that a 24 Hour power supply would cost the government an additional USD 100 million per month for diesel, furnace oil and naphthalene.
He also commented that the shortage in LP Gas supply has increased the demand for electricity and kerosene oil which has in turn increased the monthly fuel cost from USD 200 Million to USD 550 Million within a span of 4 months.
The Minister proposed that the government had no choice but to register consumers at filling stations and distribute a guaranteed weekly quota until the country’s financial situation is secure.
He noted that the government will thereafter be able to restore 24 hour power and a steady supply of fuel to the public.
The Minister tweeted that he expects to have the system in place by the first week of July.
