The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union states hydropower generation is currently in a favourable position.
Speaking to NewsRadio, President of the Union Anil Ranjith said hydropower generation has increased to 56% with levels above 50% considered favourable.
He noted with the increase in hydropower generation, the use of crude oil could be reduced.
However, Ranjith stated due to inconsistencies in rainfall, preservation of hydropower is necessary.
He said if rains persist, hydropower generation could be a sustainable source of power generation while crude oil consumption could be reduced.
Anil Ranjith added the present demand for electricity is around 2,500MW due to power disruptions.
He stated without disruptions the electricity demand is around 2,800MW while hydropower plants and the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant will not be sufficient to meet consumer demand.
Anil Ranjith said it was necessary to use power plants run on crude oil in such instances.
He added if rains persist hydropower generation could mitigate the outflow of dollars for the purchase of crude oil.
