The Central Environmental Authority has decided to collect electronic waste at 40 locations in the Western Province on the 28th and 29th of January.
The Authority said 17 locations in the Colombo District, 13 locations in Gampaha and 10 locations in Kalutara will be maintained for this purpose.
Speaking during a discussion today, Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera said the decision was reached as electronic waste that is currently not in use has caused great harm to the environment and affects public health as well.
The Authority said 95,000MT of electronic waste is disposed in Sri Lanka annually. The amount is projected to reach 121,000MT by 2021.
