The Catholic Church today questioned as to how certain individuals accused in the report by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to probe the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks of failing to prevent the bombings were acquitted.
Addressing a media briefing, the Spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Colombo Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini condemned the media briefing held by the Secretary of Defence Rt. General Kamal Gunaratne recently related to the Easter attacks.
Fr. Gamini questioned why the briefing was held amidst the present turmoil in the country.
Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini also questioned the moral right of the Defence Secretary to defend political leaders over accusations related to the Easter attacks.
The Defence Secretary during the briefing stated 735 individuals have been arrested thus far in relation to the Easter bombings with 196 among the group held and questioned in remand custody and revealed that cases have been filed against 81 individuals while 493 persons have been released on bail.
