The All Island Canteen Owners’ Association has decided to increase the price of bakery products by Rs.5 and a kottu by Rs.10 effective tomorrow.
Association President Asela Sampath attributed the price hike to the price increase of wheat flour by Rs.17 and the shortage of wheat flour reported from certain parts of the country.
Speaking to NewsRadio Sampath said yesterday’s wheat flour price hike was the steepest in the recent past.
Sampath accused importers of creating an artificial shortage of wheat flour to boost prices.
Therefore, he said the government’s weak economic control has led to such price increases.
Sampath added the price increases were not for personal gain, and only represented the increase in wheat flour prices.
He claimed wheat flour is a main raw material in Sri Lankan food items which the public deems essential.
