The All Island Canteen Owners Association says the restaurant industry has been affected further by the prevalent gas shortage and the increase in vegetable prices.
President Asela Sampath said food cannot be supplied to state institutions, schools, and universities at low costs any longer.
Sampath said they will have to serve chayote, pumpkin, cucumber, papaya, and mango in meals adding that such food poses the question over nutrition levels.
He added while henchmen of the government and businessmen enjoy all benefits, the masses suffer immeasurably.
Sampath termed this distressful and rued that the majority of the public visit restaurants observe the food and prices and only order a plain tea.
