The opposition says it does not oppose the move to amend regulations related direct taxes to improve the revenue of the government.
Speaking to media in Kandy, Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said tax rates and tax collection mechanisms should be transparent.
He said however they will not support the move to burden the people by imposing additional taxes at present.
MP Attanayake said the public is severely burdened by the price hikes and rising cost of living and therefore imposing additional taxes on consumers is unacceptable.
He said the country is suffering due to the move by the present administration which came to power in 2019 to reduce taxes on the wealthy.
The Parliamentarian said specific targeted groups are not being taxed in the country. He said at present 99 percent of the tax revenue is from indirect taxes.
MP Tissa Attanayake said since the country does not have a stringent tax collection mechanism, international bodies such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have called for reforms.
He said therefore authorities should implement a plan to impose direct taxes on targeted groups without burdening the average consumers in the country.
