The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has accused the Consumer Affairs Authority of inefficiency, due to the inability to fulfil its duty in regulating market prices.
Speaking to media Parliamentarian Ajith Mannapperuma said the decision to enforce emergency regulations on essential food supplies was unfathomable.
MP Mannapperuma added milk powder and wheat flour importers and rice mill owners have been vested immense power that they are able to regulate the price of goods.
However, the Parliamentarian claimed the Consumer Affairs Authority has shunned its responsibility in this development, claiming price controls were lifted on selected commodities allowing the market demand and supply to determine prices.
MP Mannapperuma questioned the need for emergency regulations when a free market determines rates.
The MP claimed government decisions were not formulated based on scientific grounds nor was it planned efficiently. He attributed such issues to the scarcity of fertiliser for farmers.
