The Consumer Affairs Authority has commenced island wide raids and investigations to locate businessmen selling cement at higher prices than the stipulated rate.
Accordingly, 56 cement outlets in the Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Kandy, Kurunegala, Ratnapura, Badulla, Monaragala, Anuradhapura, Galle, and Hambantota districts were raided in the recent past.
The Consumer Affairs Authority said refusing to sell cement, citing a shortage while in possession of stocks, sale based on various conditions, and concealing stocks are considered offenses.
The Authority issuing a statement said the Consumer Affairs Authority has the power to ban the sale of stocks or confiscate cement stocks belonging to vendors who claim a shortage while in possession of stocks and vendors concealing goods, after being produced before court.
Accordingly, the CAA said action will be taken in accordance with the Consumer Affairs Authority Act against vendors who violate the law.
