The Consumer Affairs Authority has sealed 52 unregistered paddy storages in the North Central and Eastern Province during the past week said to contain an estimated 8,000 metric tonnes of paddy.
The Authority also noted that three storages in Gampaha and Seeduwa with a total 5,400 metric tonnes of sugar were also sealed by officers of the authority during the same time frame.
The CAA has discussed with the Attorney General to file legal action against the owners of said storages, within the week.
Accordingly, the CAA said persons found guilty under the offence can be punished with a fine of Rs.1,000 to 10,000 or with a higher range of Rs.10,000 to 100,000 if it is a company owned storages, or/and a six month prison sentence.
