The Ministry of Transport says from today Police will take buses into custody if operators take passengers above the seat capacity and permit passengers to travel in buses while standing.

State Minister Dilum Amunugama said necessary guidelines to detain such buses have been given to all Police stations.

He said directives have been issued to the Inspector General of Police to detain such buses until further notice.

The Transport Ministry will cancel route permits of such buses as well.
