The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association says inter-provincial buses are operating in several areas at present, claiming to be essential services.
Chairman of the Association Gemunu Wijeratne said long distance buses are operating from near the Lady Ridgeway Hospital and the Colombo National Hospital.
He claimed there are large scale bus owners with affiliations to the government.
Wijeratne said the bus owners have been provided a document signed by officials attached to the Ministry of Health, granting permission to operate buses for essential services.
He claimed however the fares have been doubled for passengers. He added it is illegal, stating plans were made to inform the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption in writing, of the actions of the Director General of Health Services.
