Government attention has been directed to island wide sand distribution activities under the Building Materials Corporation from next year.
The Ministry of Environment aims to halt exploitative activities by intermediaries.
A discussion was held between sand dock owners and tipper drivers related to regulating the distribution of sand.
The Prime Minister had also issued directives to look into the possibility of distributing sand under the Building Materials Corporation.
The highest demand in the market at present is for sand from Manampitiya.
However, it was revealed that certain middlemen mix other types of sand with sand from Manampitiya and sell it at a higher price.
The Ministry said the price of a cube of sand from Manampitiya is purchased at Rs.4,830 and is being resold at Rs.6,550 by intermediaries.
The Ministry said discussions held with the Building Materials Corporation have been successful while a regulated programme will be carried out from 2022.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera emphasized that no individual must be given priority when issuing sand.
The Environment Ministry said priority will only be given to construction sites at places of worship.
