Buddhist nationals commemorate Vesak today.
Vesak marks Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death.
Vesak is a holiday common to all Buddhists, yet is celebrated differently according to local customs.
Buddhists visit temples on Vesak to perform religious rites and in addition put up Vesak lanterns and pandals to decorate homes and places of business.
The Anu Nayaka Thera of the Malwathu Chapter Most Ven. Dimbukumbure Wimaladhamma Thera says given the current economic situation in the country, it is ill timely to construct large Vesak lanterns or pandals to celebrate Vesak Poya this year.
Speaking to media in Kandy the Most Ven. said it is more suitable to hold Prathipaththi Pooja today.
Wimaladhamma thera added the country is going through an eeconomically challenging period and urged that Buddhist nationals instead observe sil, and meditate.
Meanwhile, the Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter Most Ven. Warakagoda Gnanarathana thera urged the public to act in patience, kindness, and Faith on this year’s Vesak Poya.
The Most Ven. said during the past two years Sri Lanka commemorated Vesak under challenging circumstances as well.
