The Teachers’ and Principals’ Trade Union Alliance has urged the government to bring an end to the arbitrary arrests.

General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe speaking at a media briefing said the arrest of the General Secretary of the National Bhikkhu Front Ven. Wakamulle Uditha thera has been made on baseless grounds.

He added such unlawful and undemocratic arrests must be brought to an end and called for the thera’s prompt release.

Jayasinghe claimed certain clergy were witnessed instigating incidents of hate and were seen even assaulting protesters.

However, Jayasinghe said Muditha thera on the other hand leads by example and follows all Buddhist principles.

He charged that the venerable has been arrested on false charges by the Ranil-Gotabaya government.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union Joseph Stalin joining the media briefing said the illegal arrests of Buddhist monks are a serious concern.

He said the arrest of member of the Lanka Piriven Teacher Services Union Ven. Wakamulle Uditha thera is an unlawful act.

Stalin said the venerable is a recognised Buddhist monk, adding that several other Buddhist monks’ part of unions and other activists have also been arrested.

He claimed that all such individuals are front men of the people’s struggle.
