The price of a 450g loaf of bread will be increased by Rs.30.
The All Island Bakery Owners Association said the price of short eats will increase by Rs.10.
The price hike will come into effect as of midnight today.
The decision was attributed to the wheat flour price hike that came into effect today.
A kilogram of Prima wheat flour was increased by Rs.40 while a kilogram of Serendib wheat flour was increased by Rs.35.
Prima informed dealers island-wide this morning, to increase the prices.
Agents said the price of a kilogram of wheat flour which was sold at Rs.120 will increase to Rs.160 with the new price hike.
Speaking to media, President of the Association NK Jayawardena said certain bakery owners provide bread weighing less than 450g for Rs.70-Rs.80 adding however no one will be able to provide a 450g loaf of bread for less than Rs.110 considering the current prices of ingredients.
Jayawardena said this is the highest increase in wheat flour and bread in history adding while the decision to increase prices is justifiable, the consumers unfortunately will be further burdened.
