The All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association says they are severely burdened due to the shortage of wheat flour, butter, margarine and palm oil, required for bakery products.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Chairman NK Jayawardena said the public and all industries including the bakery industry are severely inconvenienced at present.
He claimed the bakery industry will not be able to operate for at least another month.
He added the industry was burdened by the flour shortage for several months and is now affected by a shortage of other ingredients.
He noted butter, margarine, palm oil and coconut oil is imported, while less than five percent of the country’s requirement is produced locally.
Jayawardena said the ingredients cannot be imported at present due to the dollar shortage.
He noted operations at bakeries are also disrupted due to the imposition of power cuts while generators cannot be used due to the fuel shortage.
He added therefore all industries are severely burdened.
