Former Governor of the Western Province Azath Salley has been acquitted from the two indictments filed against him under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Indictments were served on former Governor Azath Salley for allegedly making a statement to inciting racism during a press conference on the 9th of March.
The order was issued by Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja this morning.
Announcing the verdict, the Judge said the complainants failed to prove that the defendant had made statements to incite hatred or racism.
He was arrested over the incident on the 16th of March under provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Mohamad Muzammil and two others who filed complaints against Former Governor Azath Salley were issued notice to appear in Court on the 21st of February.
Attorney Maithri Gunaratne, representing Salley, speaking in Court said the complainants filed a case with the intent of malicious allegations based on political motives.
Attorney Gunaratne said he intends on obtaining compensation from the complainant under the Code of Criminal Procedure.
