Attendance of school children is reportedly at an unsatisfactory level, although academic activities of primary sections from Grade 1 to 5, of schools with less than 200 students commenced this morning.
NewsRadio correspondents said attendance was the same in Dambulla, Nuwara Eliya, Ambalangoda, Ratnapura, Kurunegala and Anuradhapura.
Our correspondent said while a few students attended schools, there was a significant drop in attendance of teachers and principals.
The Teachers’ and Principals’ Trade Union Alliance recently said they will not report for duty today and tomorrow even though schools reopened today.
However, the unions said they will resume teaching from Monday.
Primary sections of schools across the country with less than 200 students, reopened today for the new term.
The Ministry of Education said under the first phase, nearly 3,800 schools reopened today.
