The National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection charges that several businessmen are attempting to carry out a racket by mixing palm oil with coconut oil.

Speaking to NewsRadio, Chairman of the Movement Ranjith Vithanage claimed the relevant businessmen are attempting to carry out the process by reducing the import tax imposed on palm oil.

Vithanage stressed the government must think of the people and not businessmen, when carrying out duties at present.

He noted most consumers faced a serious issue with palm oil being mixed with coconut oil adding the government issued a Gazette to look into the contamination of coconut oil.

He added however the move was not a success.

Ranjith Vithanage said therefore the government increased the import tax imposed on palm oil, which was an apt decision.

He stated as a result the racket to mix palm oil to coconut oil in the market had come to a halt.

Vithanage said however a group of businessmen are attempting to reduce the import tax for palm oil, which will allow them to mix palm oil to coconut oil once again.

He noted prices of coconut oil increased in February, adding businessmen are attempting to gain profits at such a time.
