The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of Parliamentarian Johnston Fernando, who has been named as a suspect in the May 9th unrest.
The order was issued by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage after taking into consideration a request by the Attorney Generals Department.
A writ petition was meanwhile filed before the Court of Appeal seeking an order to prevent the arrest of MP Fernando.
NewsRadio Court correspondent said the petition was filed by attorneys on behalf of the Parliamentarian.
The petition will be taken up at the Appeals Court tomorrow. Meanwhile, Parliamentarians Milan Jayathileka and 12 others who were arrested and remanded over the unrest on the 9th of May opposite Temple Trees and at Galle Face have been released on bail.
Furthermore, Parliamentarian Sanath Nishantha, Mayor of Moratuwa Saman Lal Fernando, Dan Priyasad and another group were further remanded till the 15th of June.
