Representatives of 10 independent political parties have made a written request to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to appoint a Presidential Commission to uncover the truth behind the events that took place on the 9th of May.
Parliamentarian Weerasumana Weerasinghe speaking in Parliament today said the events that unfolded last Monday must be scrutinised in detail.
The MP said a request was made to the President in writing calling for those responsible to be identified and for action to be taken.
Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said the group that visited Temple Trees that morning who engaged in clashes led to the unrest across the island.
The MP joining the debate said the protests at Galle Face were peaceful and even drew international attention for its peaceful nature.
MP Kiriella said the right to peaceful protest is enabled through the Constitution.
He also accused the group at Temple Trees of assaulting Policemen as well.
MP Kiriella said the videos indicated that certain Members of Parliament encouraged the violence at Galle Face.
