The Department of National Zoological Gardens has initiated a programme to relocate animals with a larger population at the Dehiwala Zoo to the Pinnawala Zoo.
Subject Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has held discussions with officials of the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation in this regard.
Future development activities of the Pinnawala Zoo and the Ridiyagama Safari Park were also discussed at the meeting.
Meanwhile, it was revealed that a large number of individuals have come forward to sponsoring the care and food requirements of animals due to the lack of financial resources at zoos.
The Ministry announced that the Department of National Zoological Gardens has taken steps to open a new 20-acre animal husbandry farm in Ridiyagama.
