Chief Secretary of the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Ananda Palitha, who was arrested on charges of making a false statement regarding a fuel shortage, has been granted bail.
The order was issued when he was produced before the Colombo Additional Magistrate this afternoon.
He was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department last evening at his residence in Wattala, over a recent claim he made at a media briefing on the 19th of August of an impending fuel shortage.
During the media briefing he stated that fuel reserves would suffice only 11 days.
The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation lodged a complaint with the CID over Ananda Palitha’s statement, claiming there is no truth to his statement and called for an investigation to be carried out into his charges as public panic was caused over the statement.
The CID following investigations revealed that there was no truth to Ananda Palitha’s claims.
