Minister of Transport Dilum Amunugama has issued directives to immediately suspend the decision to amend train fares of certain journeys.
The Minister said the increase was enforced prior to obtaining the consent of Sri Lanka Railways and the Ministry of Transport.
The Minister said special train and intercity train fares will not be increased as arbitrarily decided.
A round of talks was due to be held yesterday pertaining to the revision of train fares.
Minister Amunugama said a final decision will be announced on Monday or Tuesday next week following a discussion this evening, adding that a hike will be imposed only to the extent necessary to cover the increase in fuel prices.
