Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says the government will take steps to extend state patronage and security granted to Buddhism towards other religions as well.
Speaking via Zoom from the Temple Trees during the state Christmas ceremony held at St. Mary’s College, Kegalle, Prime Minister Rajapaksa said he has granted priority to development of places of worship belonging to all religions in his capacity as the Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs as well as the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister said the Church ensures unity amongst religions. The Premier said the government has taken steps to develop churches and provide facilities to Sunday schools.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa said today a need for the right religious leadership to maintain discipline in society has arisen.
The Prime Minister said religion is paramount in maintaining discipline in any society adding distancing religion contributes to the increase in criminal activities.
The Premier said society cannot be rehabilitated by enforcing laws and handing prison sentences adding the society must be enriched with religious fundamentals.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa said everyone must be committed to creating a society filled with basic fundamentals.
