Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera says the Minister of Finance has assured that stocks of food stored in all containers, currently stored at harbour warehouses, will be released.
The Minister speaking at a media briefing today said the government will ensure a shortage of food does not arise.
The Minister further stated the government will also intervene and reduce the price of sugar in the near future.
Minister Amaraweera said there are certain matter that the government cannot control including the price of milk powder increasing steeply in the world market.
He however said the government reduced taxes for milk powder importers. Journalists also questioned the Minister over discussions held with the teacher principal trade unions.
The Minister said a report will be compiled today containing the positive proposals tabled by the trade unions during the talks.
He said lengthy discussions with the Minister of Education were held with the participation of a majority of trade unions.
The Minister added the report will be submitted to the Minister of Finance for discussion tomorrow while a report will be tabled at the next Cabinet of Ministers meeting as well.
