General Secretary of the Ceylon Electricity Board Employees Union Ranjan Jayalal says in the event of an unusual breakdown in the power supply system, repairs will not be carried out today owing to the strike action.
Jayalal speaking to NewsRadio said they will not engage in any trade union action that will burden the public.
Jayalal however said if any breakdown in the National Grid is reported within the day, they will not reconnect services.
He also informed consumers to refrain from paying electricity bills today as they will not accept payments. He said the government’s decision to increase electricity tariffs will further burden the public.
He noted that all trade unions of the CEB have joined the strike today, adding that this strike action will be decisive.
Jayalal said the CEB union two days ago reached a decision to hold a strike action, in order to force the government to resign, adding that trade unions who supported the government during elections also supported this decision.
However, Jayalal assured that hospitals will face no power disruptions despite the strike action.
