The government has directed attention towards importing fertiliser from India.
Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage said fertiliser that contains harmful bacteria will not be allowed to be imported.
Speaking to media the Minister said a recently imported consignment of fertiliser from a Chinese company was re-exported after the firm accepted that the stock was harmful to the soil.
He assured that the Chinese company promised to supply a new shipment of fertiliser which passed the quality assessment adding the ship that brought the consignment of fertiliser from China was turned back.
Minister Aluthgamage said they are currently in talks with Indian manufacturers to import fertiliser to the country.
He added any fertiliser imported to the country will undergo a quality standard test and thereafter be released.
