The Attorney General has instructed Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne to record statements and arrest 22 individuals, including former Ministers, in connection with the attack on protesters at Galle Face and opposite the Temple Trees on the 9th of May.
The group includes Parliamentarians Johnston Fernando, Sanath Nishantha, Milan Jayathilake and Sanjeeva Edirimanna, Senior DIG-Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon, Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando, Mahinda Kahandagama and Dan Priyasad.
The Attorney General’s Department said an extract of its investigations into the incidents has been submitted to the Criminal Investigation Department.
These individuals had been identified in connection with the incidents through investigations.
The Attorney General had issued directives to the IGP accordingly.
Sources from the Attorney General’s Department said steps will be taken to advise on the course of action to be taken against former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa after a close examination of the summary, including excerpts from investigations into the incidents.
A team of senior officials from the Attorney General’s Department will examine the progress of the investigation and then take necessary steps to advise the investigating officers on further action to be taken.
