Health authorities urge the general public to be mindful when storing fuel at home, especially during the New Year season.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Chief Nurse of the National Hospital, Pushpa Ramyani De Soysa said the number of accidents linked to kerosene oil and petrol in households has seen a marked increase in recent days.
She said additionally during the festive period, accidents linked to firecrackers and other activities increase.
Pushpa Ramyani De Soysa noted that due to the prevailing climate in the country, the public has a tendency of storing kerosene oil and fuel.
She urged the public to store fuel securely and to also be extra vigilant when using firecrackers.
The Chief Nurse of the National Hospital noted that the public should take all precautions during the festive period to minimize road accidents, accidents at homes and firecrackers-related incidents.
She noted children should not be allowed to use firecrackers without any supervision.
