The Marine Environment Protection Authority says it hopes to take legal action against those who visit the Colombo Port City and dispose of waste into the surrounding ocean.
Speaking to NewsRadio, MEPA Chairperson Dharshani Lahandapura said posts were shared across social media, pertaining to visitors of the Port City disposing garbage into surrounding waters.
She stressed that legal action will be taken against such groups under provisions of the Marine Pollution Prevention Act.
Meanwhile, the Marine Environment Protection Authority has taken steps to implement an awareness programme in collaboration with Port City to prevent the disposal of waste into the surrounding sea.
Accordingly, Lahandapura requested the public to refrain from discharging waste into the marine environment while visiting the Colombo Port City and in Lankan beaches in general.
She warned that the local marine environment has been excessively polluted.
