Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera claims that the authorities have been instructed to strictly enforce the law against the ongoing unauthorised constructions in the vicinity of the Mahaweli River Reserve which has been designated as a sensitive ecosystem.
The Minister made this statement to media during a visit to an area where illegal constructions are taking place.
The Environment Minister said during a short time period, he observed several illegal constructions.
He said some of the areas are designated by the Central Environmental Authority, and others are part of the Mahaweli River Reserve or belong to local government bodies.
The Minister said court cases have been filed against certain individuals by all three factions adding however illegal constructions are continuing.
He said he instructed officials to take forward the cases against such individuals.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera added if there are private lands with deeds, they are hoping to discuss with owners and take over such lands by providing a compensation and then it will be gazetted as sensitive zones.
