Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today warned that more violent incidents could surface in the country if Parliament and the government fail to address the issues faced by the people including the fuel crisis.
Speaking in Parliament today, former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe urged the government not to politicize the Rambukkana unrest.
The former Premier noted that the individual, who succumbed to injuries sustained during yesterday’s Rambukkana unrest, is not a person who will resort to violence or set fire to a fuel bowser.
The Leader of the United National Party said the deceased individual who was a former UNP Youth Wing member has taken part in several peaceful demonstrations in the past.
The former Prime Minister questioned as to why Police were in hurry to open fire at protesters for merely blocking a road.
Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said area residents were merely protesting over the fuel shortage and the price hike.
The former Premier said people are facing severe hardship owing to the fuel shortage and therefore they are resorting to protests across the country.
Former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said therefore without wasting time on hurling allegations at one another, the entire Parliament should come together and provide a programme to resolve the current crisis.
