The Ministry of Agriculture says 95% of the total farming lands to be cultivated during the Maha season has been cultivated.
It was confirmed by the District Agriculture Officers at a progress review meeting held in Colombo today.
They stated that the paddy harvest this year would be between 70% and 75% in comparison to the last Maha season.
During the discussion attended by Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage and State Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa, it was revealed that terms agreed by certain local fertilizer producers were violated when supplying fertilizer.
Accordingly the Minister has instructed the Secretaries of the Ministry to call a report before the 31st of December to look into whether they have complied with the agreements reached with the local fertilizer companies.
The Ministers also informed officials that everyone should be prepared to carry out organic farming as scheduled from the Yala season, avoiding the shortcomings that have occurred during the production and distribution of fertilizer during the Maha season.
