A total of 91 persons who attempted to flee the country illegally have been apprehended in Marawila and Chilaw by the Sri Lanka Navy.

The Navy said the group was taken into custody during a special operation in seas off Marawila and Chilaw.

13 males, a nine-year-old boy and a smuggler have been apprehended from a rest house in Marawila.

Meanwhile, Navy had tracked down a multiday fishing trawler in seas off Chilaw and had taken 58 males, five females and seven children along with six smugglers into custody.

The suspects are residents of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Trincomalee, Puttalam, Kalpitiya, Chilaw, Marawila and Negombo.

The group has been handed over to the Colombo Harbour Police for further action.
