A total of 6,923 dengue cases have been reported across Sri Lanka in January 2022.

The National Dengue Control Unit said 53.4 percent of the dengue cases reported this year had been from the Western Province.

It added that 30 percent of the cases reported this year were among children between five and 19 years of age while around five 5 percent of the cases had been among children below the age of five.

The Dengue Control Unit said the current spike in dengue cases is a concern.

Meanwhile, in 2021, 35,924 dengue cases were reported in Sri Lanka with 8,966 cases alone in December.

Speaking during a media briefing at the Department of Government Information today, Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said all public and state sector institutions in the country must appoint a person responsible for maintaining a dengue-free environment.

Dr. Samaraweera said the person responsible must inform all steps taken each month to the area Medical Officer of Health adding the MOH can then supervise the activities and provide necessary advice.

He said they observed a spike in dengue infections around construction sites and temporary structures.
