Deputy Director General of Health Services Specialist Dr. Hemantha Herath says the target to vaccinate 70 percent of the country’s population against COVID-19 can be achieved without any difficulties.
Speaking to media Dr. Hemantha Herath said 60 percent of the country’s population has been fully vaccinated against the virus, with over 13,201,141 persons having received the second dose.
Dr. Herath stated nearly 70 percent has already received the first dose, adding a majority will definitely obtain the second dose as well.
He noted health guidelines must continue to be followed, as the vaccine does not provide complete protection against the virus.
Dr. Herath said obtaining the vaccine increases immunity, and will prevent complications and deaths related to COVID-19 infection.
He added the vaccine will also reduce the probability of an individual spreading the virus, as the virus growth in vaccinated individuals is considerably low.
Dr. Hemantha Herath stressed it will help prevent the spread of the virus within the community.
