A total of 598 inmates who had escaped from the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre have been apprehended.
Police said they were apprehended following a special operation.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa informed NewsRadio that another 100 inmates are still at large.
Police yesterday said over 600 inmates of the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre escaped from the premises following a heated situation.
The Police Media Unit said an addict who was receiving in-house treatment at the centre had died under suspicious circumstances, on Tuesday.
Accordingly, a Police team had been deployed to the premises to investigate the death.
Police said while the officers were in the premises a heated situation arose and then over 600 inmates had managed to escape after damaging public property.
Police said around 250 escapees were apprehended yesterday itself. Meanwhile, those who were arrested are scheduled to be produced before court today.
Yesterday, the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation directed authorities to conduct an independent investigation over the incident.
Police said Sri Lanka Army is responsible for providing security to the centre which houses around 1,000 inmates.
Police and Sri Lanka Army had commenced an operation to apprehend the escapees.
