Police say it has been confirmed that the chief suspect in the incident in which a grenade was found at the All Saints Church in Borella yesterday, is a 56-year-old individual who has been associated with the church for around 16 years.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the suspect had been working in the church for around nine months, while staying at the church permanently.
Four suspects were arrested yesterday, after the incident was reported.
SSP Nihal Thalduwa said facts were reported to Court pertaining to a 13-year-old child who was used in this incident.
He added the child visited the church frequently and was a resident of the area.
He said the relevant child was produced before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate Court No. 2 and a statement was also provided to the Magistrate by the child.
SSP Thalduwa noted the live hand grenade was kept in a manner that it will explode as a result of a fire, and fixed with sellotape, incense sticks, match sticks and rubber strips.
He stated sellotape, match sticks and other items used to fix the grenade were found in his room.
Further investigations pertaining to the incident are being carried out by the Colombo Crimes Division.
