It has been revealed that 5,533 vehicles belonging to government establishments are not under running condition.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as Minister of Economic Policies and Plan Implementation submitted a report at the Cabinet of Ministers on information related to vehicles at government establishments.
According to the report 82,194 vehicles are currently under government institutions such as Ministries, State Enterprises and Provincial Councils and Local Government Institutions.
Of the figure 76,661 vehicles are in running condition, 5,533 are not in running condition, 33,931 under the ownership of government institutions including Ministries, 26,395 vehicles under State Enterprises and 16,335 under the Provincial Councils and Local Government Institutions.
The report states that 8,500 senior officials of state institutions have been allowed to use their private vehicles for official transport purposes with a monthly allowance.
Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has decided to utilize repairable vehicles that are not in running condition and to discard irreparable vehicles according to a formal methodology with immediate effect.
